Insitu gasification of coal or Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is the technique of converting coal into gas while it is still in the seam and then extracting it through wells. It produces Syngas which is a mixture consisting primarily of methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour (H 2 O).

Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) takes advantage of the same chemical reactions of coal to produce product gases, as those occurring in conventional gasifier reactors. The main difference is that in UCG the underground coal seam itself becomes the reactor, so that the gasification of the coal takes place underground instead of in a manufactured gasification vessel at the Obviously ...

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the process of converting hydrocarbon materials into synthesis gas insitu. Underground coal gasification is sometimes referred to as insitu coal gasification (ISCG). The process has been developed over more than a century, though only a few projects currently operate on a continuous basis.

In underground coal gasification, unmineable coal is converted into clean gaseous fuel. The UCG process starts in coal seam, proceeds to interior of the coal to form cavities and converts coal into gaseous product leaving the solid ash beyond. As the gasification process proceeds, the cavity grows 3dimensionally and nonlinearly.

Underground Coal Gasification: A Brief Review of Current Status

Coal gasification is a promising option for the future use of coal. Similarly to gasification in industrial reactors, underground coal gasification (UCG) produces syngas, which can be used for power generation or for the production of liquid hydrocarbon fuels and other valuable chemical products. As compared with conventional mining and surface gasification, UCG promises lower capital ...

The process involves gasification of coal, which in turn will produce synthetic gas (a mix of CO+H2). The synthetic gas can be liquefied to its fuel equivalent in presence of cobalt/ironbased catalysts at higher pressure and temperature. However, liquefied coal emits twice as much CO2 as burning oil. It also emits a large volume of SO2.
